Woven paper/photographs and drafting film depicting movement
between opposites – a singular expression of duality
Artist Statement
The conundrum of one and two is persistent. We experience our singular essence in the duality of nature, living as one in between the opposites of two – left to right, up to down, dark to light, wet to dry, high to low, past to present – the list seems endless. The grace of time allows us to live easily in both, to be fully present in one aspect before moving over to the other. Movement between opposites is the key.
In my art, I express this through weaving a weft of photographs I’ve taken over the years with the warp of drafting film. Spirals, arcs and lines show pathways of connection, one to the other. The haiku adds voice to the image and the opposites.
I love the layering of separation and connection, knowing and wondering, pattern and color, woven together by images from around the globe at various stages of my life. I like to think of a ‘sphere of being’ at the threshold between opposites – a point of time in the transition between internal and external infinity – with the option to move in whichever direction is most true in the moment. ~laura servid
